How To Keep Your Hearing Aids Safe This Spring

While the springtime can bring a break from the cold winter weather, it can also damage your hearing aids. You'll want to enjoy the sounds of spring without having to replace your hearing aids. That's why it's important that you do what you can to protect them against damage. There are some different factors that can be detrimental to your hearing aids.

Swimming

When the weather gets too hot outside, going for a swim is a great way to cool down and relax. But, moisture is the number one cause of malfunctioning hearing aids. Unless you have hearing aids that are 100% waterproof, you need to remove them before you swim.

Water-resistant doesn't mean that they can withstand becoming encased in moisture. Be sure to store your hearing devices in a moisture-proof container. This protects them from getting any moisture in them from the splashing around the pool or ocean.

Wind, Dirt, and Pollen

All it takes is a dry and windy climate in order for airborne debris to make it inside of your hearing devices. If you're like most people with hearing loss, you don't clean your hearing aids every time you come inside. This can actually be detrimental. As debris builds up inside of your hearing device, the more damage it causes to the internal parts.

Exercising

Another common activity that will produce moisture is exercising. If you have in-the-ear or behind-the-ear devices, sweat can get in the internal parts. Additionally, as you sweat, your body lets off sodium.

This can cause corrosion in the internal parts of your hearing aid. You may not immediately notice the damage at first. But, over time you'll start to see the corrosion occur and have more difficulty with your hearing loss.

Sports

Sports are a great way to hang out with friends and let off some steam. Depending on the sport that you play you may find that it's easy to dislodge or damage your hearing aids. Instead of having to stop the game to search for them, you're better off making sure that they're secure to your head.

You can do this in many different ways including skull caps, clips, and even headbands. All these will help you keep your hearing aids in place throughout the entire game. You don't have to worry about them getting lost or damaged.

Heat

In the springtime, you may take part in an activity where you can't have your hearing aids in. In this case, you need to make sure that you keep them out of the heat. It might seem very simple to store your hearing aids in your glove box or center console.

But, the interior of your vehicle can reach temperatures up to 120 degrees in the summertime. This can be damaging to the internal components of your hearing aid.
