Hearing Aid Static

Why Is My Hearing Aid Making A Static Noise?

Many people know that hearing aids help those who have difficulty hearing. On a technical level, hearing aids use digital sound processing to make sounds louder. Unfortunately, sometimes this process can result in the user hearing a static noise.

Battery Connection Issue

The most common culprit of static noise coming from a hearing aid is a connection issue with its battery. Check for dirt or other debris stuck between your battery and the connector contacts. It could be preventing the full voltage of the battery from going to your hearing aid.

It's best to check your battery and the connector contacts to see if there is a problem. This could also happen if your battery is not the right voltage for the hearing aid that you have.

Manufacturing Defect

If you're using hearing aids for the first time, the static that you hear may be due to a manufacturing defect. It's best to speak with one of our hearing care professionals to identify the source of the defect. You should never try to put in new hearing aids without having them tuned by a hearing care professional.

Moisture-Related Signal Disturbance

If this is the first time hearing a static noise coming from your hearing aids, it could be the result of moisture. This moisture can disrupt the normal signal created by your hearing aids. Unless you have waterproof hearing aids, be careful about having them near moisture. This means protecting them from rain, sweat, showering, and even swimming.

An Unfamiliar Sound

Again, if you're using your hearing aids for the first time, then the static noise that you hear may not be a defect at all. Rather, it could be a noise coming from something that you're unfamiliar with. For example, the compressor on your refrigerator gets noisy at the end of its lifespan.

If you've had hearing issues for a while, then you may not have noticed the noisy compressor until now. Hearing aids enhance your hearing ability. It's a good rule of thumb to ask those around you if they hear the static too as this could reveal its source.
